We all grew up fearing the monster under our beds,
it's only as we grew older that we realised the monsters were simply in our heads.
We used to check the wardrobes and under the stairs,
fearing an imaginary thing made by our own fears.

We used to fear the looming shadow on our bedroom walls,
cast there by the protecting light out in the hall.
Our parents' sweet exasperation- "Darling there's nothing there",
Yet our only response was to hold on tighter to our beloved Teddy Bear.
Because surely what they said couldn't be real, they couldn't mean...
that a monster wasn't real just because it couldn't be seen?

We all grew up fearing the monster under our beds,
it's only as we grew older that we realised the monsters were simply in our heads.
We used to check the wardrobes and under the stairs,
scared an imaginary thing made by our own fears.

The day was safe, it was normal and light,
but that didn't matter because the monsters returned when it wasn't so bright.
When they could skitter across the walls and slide along the floor,
and they could pour themselves through the gap under the door.
Slither up your bed-frame, and crawl under the bedsheet,
grab onto your feet-
"DAD!"
Your parents burst through the door, unknowingly chasing away the bad.
"Monsters!" You cry "The Monsters came back!"
Back in the days when night gave the monster chance to attack.

We all grew up fearing the monster under our beds,
it's only as we grew older that we realised the monsters were simply in our heads.
We used to check the wardrobes and under the stairs,
scared an imaginary thing made by our own fears.

Now we're older- we look back on our silly little ideas,
laughing away the cloying terror that came with the fears.
The monsters weren't real! they were all in our dreams!
casually forgetting the years of night- time screams.
I look back at my own night "monsters" and wonder why,
my brain made up such horrifying shadows to make me cry.

We all grew up fearing the monster under our beds,
it's only as we grew older that we realised the monsters were simply in our heads.
We used to check the wardrobes and under the stairs,
scared an imaginary thing made by our own fears.

People say monsters aren't real, that it's inside our heads,
but they still remember their own terror beneath their old beds.
But we can't say that monsters aren't real,
because nothing fake could make you feel the terror you feel,
as a child, alone, at night.
Don't be scared of monsters, don't let them give you a fright.

In fact you should simply search for them,
and being scared won't be a problem.
Look to your left and see what's there
(if you see it out it won't turn into a nightmare)
Look to your right and think about what you see
(It's one less monster allowed to roam free)
Check under your bed with your a torch or some kind of light
(Just to make sure there's nothing waiting until the night)
Check behind the dresser, maybe even check inside
(Just to show yourself there's no space for anything to hide)
Definitely look in the wardrobe, make sure to shut the door
(Pause for a moment to see if you hear the scratching of claws)

Just don't ever look up, because from what I can glean,
she absolutely despises ever being seen...
What do you think?
